Your Most Valuable Financial Asset

220

One thing people sometimes underestimate is just how valuable their mental well being is, specifically how this affects their ability to work. Although I’m an advocate for early financial freedom and the ability to retire by 40, there are many who will be most happy working a long and satisfying career. Burning out from your career prematurely is a financial weapon of mass destruction.

Sometimes we get bogged down in the little financial decisions in life, but fail to really protect and cultivate our biggest asset – ourselves. I argue that our ability to work and stay mentally healthy is our biggest financial asset, and that many other decisions that we feel are important are just details.

This week I published a guest post over on The White Coat Investor, a blog dedicated to educating physicians about financial issues. I highly recommend it if you are in the medical profession. I would consider it required reading for physicians. As you know by now if you are a regular reader of my blog, financial freedom creates true freedom, and the foundation of that freedom is education and taking action based on that knowledge.

Please head over to White Coat Investor and give the article a read. I think you will find the article, as well as many of the other great posts on the site useful even if you are not a physician, as the general principals apply to nearly everyone.

When you are finished please feel free to leave a comment over there or below and tell me what you think.

If you are arriving here from the WCI article, welcome. You may enjoy this interview I did with Joshua Sheats on the Radical Personal Finance podcast where we discuss physician burnout and other issues in more detail. Here is a good place to start if you want a few of my posts relevant to that discussion.

PS: This is an excellent book by Dr. Dahle, the editor of WCI. I highly recommend it for physicians. It contains highly actionable information and concise knowledge from his blog if you don’t want to read through the hundreds of posts there.
