Ha! Good stuff here. I heard a statistician on NPR give the following analogy of the most recent Powerball...
["If you had a stack of pennies, the height of the Empire State Building, one of which was a winner, it would cost you roughly $1000 just to purchase a single penny."] Totally insane.

Well, apparently at least one person won tonight. Hopefully a blog reader who will share with me ;)

The real tragedy in this is all the people that spent the money and didn't win. Sure, many of those people could afford it, but there are many in poverty that cannot. As I stated, the people that play these lotteries are disproportionately poor - the last people that should be playing.

Our greatest voice in society is with how we choose to spend our capital, not how we vote at the ballot box. Buying a lottery ticket is a vote for madness - but ultimately our choice none the less.

Couldn't agree more. The mania around the lottery tickets is just nuts. The sad part is working people will joke about "if I win the lottery tonight, you won't see me tomorrow!" It just reveals how unhappy they are currently. Winning money won't make them happier; even if they did win, they'll be without even the company of their work colleagues. Which is probably why most lottery winners spend the money, go broke, and end up working again.
