Greetings philosophers! I have a couple of new podcasts to share with you this week (featuring yours truly). Podcasts are very different than blogging. When I write, my words are carefully chosen and deliberate. The pace at which the thoughts come out of my head is constrained by my very poor tying skills and old rickety keyboard. Verbal interviews are different. My thoughts come out quicker and are less constrained. I never quite know what I’m going to say or what I’m going to focus on. Instead of posts that take days of thinking, an interview is what I am thinking about at that moment. If you are interested in hearing my thoughts rather than reading, I give you two new podcasts I did, and also a summary of all my podcasts to date.
The White Coat Investor
Jim Dahle, MD runs a very successful and widely read blog, has written a great finance book for physicians and has more recently expanded into the podcasting space. We had a great discussion about finance, burnout, and happiness. I love how this one turned out and you can listen to here:

The Heart Failure Podcast
This one is interesting. It is a narrative created from a discussion I had with Marc Smith. I am episode two. It is a different format than my typical interview, but I liked it. Listen to it here:
https://www.theheartfailurepodcast.com/episodes/
From his website:
“Marc Smith is a fourth-year medical student at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons who will be starting his residency in psychiatry in July 2018 at the Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center. Marc’s interest in the topic of burnout began after he left the financial industry to pursue a more fulfilling career in medicine. While in medical school, he was shocked to discover that burnout was even more widespread and consequential in the medical field than his previous profession. Inspired by a belief in the power of narratives to create change, Marc started The Heart Failure Podcast in an effort to address this problem and help contribute to a solution.”
I look forward to hearing more episodes, and hearing doctors discuss burnout from their perspective.
Lifelong Learning Podcast
Kate Nesi and I had a great talk on her podcast where we discussed some of my favorite blogposts. She is a mom, librarian, runner and podcaster. How’s that for a random bio! You can listen to us chat here:

Choose FI
Jonathan and Brad are awesome. They are passionate about financial independence and do a fantastic podcast. They continuously get really high quality guests, but occasionally let someone like me slip through the cracks. You can listen here:

The Mad Fientist
Brandon is one of the ‘old guard’ in the FI community and is genuinely one of the nicest guys I’ve met. His blog and podcast are fantastic. Like me, he doesn’t publish or create frequently, but the content he puts out is great and worth consuming. You can listen to our conversation here:

Physician Financial Success Podcast
This one is hosted by Josh Mettle, who specializes in home loans for physicians. We had a great talk and you can listen to it here:

Radical Personal Finance
This was my first podcast interview (I think) and has a funny story about it. I reached out to Joshua and asked him if my story would be interesting for a podcast. He said yes and we set up a time to chat about it. When he called I thought we were just discussing what we were going to talk about in the interview and set it up, but of course he was calling to do the actual interview! I was completely unprepared, very nervous, and of course it was a complete disaster. After we stopped he took a deep breath and said he didn’t know if he could use it. I understood and didn’t know if I wanted him to anyways!
Later in the day I collected myself, emailed him and asked if we could repeat the interview after I had some time to prepare and collect my thoughts. The second time around went much better and I’m glad I persisted. Interestingly this interview is completely unedited. That’s how Joshua does his interviews, so everything I said in that conversation is there. You can listen to my podcasting debut here:
It is interesting. It doesn’t really feel like I’ve done that many podcasts, but looking back there is a decent amount of material there. Small changes over time do make a difference. Just like when Mrs. Happy Philosopher started her ‘running career’, it was the small changes over time that made a difference, not any one huge leap. I think it is worthwhile to reflect upon change in our life and really appreciate how these small actions can make a big difference. Happy listening!

If you keep this up you’re going to need an agent and publicist…
Hahaha, if you can get me on the Tim Ferriss Show you are hired 🙂
I really enjoyed The Heart Failure Podcast – I have found myself mirroring your journey of burnout into the rabbit hole of early retirement. I’ve read your journey about cutting back on the blog, but hearing it makes it more tangible and real somehow. I’ve finally convinced myself to cut back after this weekend after hearing your podcast and reading comments on some Facebook physician groups. Thanks for sharing your story!
Excellent! Let me know how it changes your burnout after you make the change. Great stuff on your blog by the way 🙂
Thanks for reading! It’s a little surreal to hear you read my blog since I’ve been reading yours for a long time. I’ll definitely update you after the change.
Also, thanks for sharing my blog post on twitter! I actually had to create a twitter account to figure out where all this twitter traffic was coming from!
Hahaha! Twitter is fun, so I’m happy to be your gateway drug. I sent you an email, not sure if it went through.
Just replied to your email! I still haven’t quite figured twitter out yet, so I’ve just been lurking on different profiles like a creep without actually following.. haha! I think technically that makes me a bad millennial, but I’m spinning it by telling myself I’m trying to be mindfully selective.
Thanks for sharing the episode again! Looking forward to listening to the other shows you’ve shared as well!
🙂
Just listened to your podcast on WCI. Really good stuff, man. I appreciate your work and your voice in a difficult time on a difficult topic.
